Why a Simple Delete Isn't Enough

Many people make the mistake of manually deleting their photos and apps before handing their phone to a local buyer. This is incredibly dangerous. Data recovery software can easily retrieve "deleted" files if the storage sector hasn't been properly overwritten or cryptographically wiped.

Step 1: Backup Everything

Before doing anything, ensure your data is safe. For iPhones, go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup. For Androids, go to Settings > Google > Backup. You can also back up locally to a PC or Mac.

Step 2: Sign Out of Your Accounts (Crucial!)

This is the step most people forget, which triggers Activation Locks (like iCloud Lock or FRP - Factory Reset Protection) making the phone useless for the next buyer.

  • iPhone: Go to Settings, tap your name at the top, scroll to the bottom, and tap Sign Out. You will need your Apple ID password to disable "Find My".
  • Android: Go to Settings > Accounts. Tap on your Google account and select Remove Account. Do this for Samsung accounts or Mi accounts as well.

Step 3: Factory Data Reset

Now that your accounts are removed, it's safe to wipe the device.

  • iPhone: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
  • Android: Settings > System > Reset Options > Erase all data (factory reset).
