The Risks of Buying a Used iPhone
Every day in Delhi NCR, hundreds of people buy used iPhones off local marketplaces like OLX and Facebook Marketplace. Unfortunately, many end up with a repaired phone containing duplicate parts, a boosted battery, or worse—a stolen device.
The 16-Point Checklist
If you are buying from an unverified seller, you need to check these things manually:
- Original Display Check: Ensure True Tone works. Check for message in Settings > General > About indicating a non-genuine display.
- Battery Health: Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Anything below 85% might need replacement soon. Beware of "boosted" batteries that show 100% but drain fast.
- IMEI Match: Dial *#06# and match the IMEI on the screen with the physical box and the bill.
- CEIR Blacklist: Check the IMEI on the Government of India's CEIR portal to ensure it isn't registered as stolen.
- Cameras & Mics: Test all three lenses (0.5x, 1x, 3x) and record a video to test the microphone.
- Face ID: Try setting up your own Face ID. If it fails, the TrueDepth camera is broken (a very expensive repair).
Checking all 16 points takes about 30 minutes and requires technical knowledge.
